About Us

Welcome to the colourful world of MayHem.

The germ of the kernel of the idea of MayHem was conceived many years ago…

…our story begins – as all good stories do – with a wild night out. Or, more specifically, with the plan for a wild night out. Zoo Project (Ibiza club night) was visiting Newcastle in the summer of 2010, and a friend of mine asked me to put my costume skills to the test and knock up a couple of animal print catsuits. “Clubbing in flexible, breathable, dance-your-pants-off friendly spandex which also makes you look and feel INCREDIBLE?” …YES PLEASE!
I donned the techno leopard, Christina the electro snake, and VOILA! Our clubbing attire – nay, the very essence of our lives – was changed forever. The night was EPIC. We felt super comfortable, danced like EVERYONE was watching, and felt absolutely free.

We spread the word.

Demand for spandex began.

Backstory: I am a trained fashion designer, pattern cutter and maker, and have worked at both Heriot Watt University and Glasgow School of Art. It was in Glasgow that I met an amazing group of people and together we started Sweet Life – a group with the sole aim of making exercise fun and accessible to everyone. We began putting on local community yoga and aerobics events with a generous dollop of silliness and colour that proved extremely popular to all ages and abilities...

Demand for spandex increased.

We started taking Sweet Aerobics to festivals: mainly because festivals are great and it meant we could combine cutting about in kick-ass spandex and ridiculous Mr Motivator moves with that invigorating feeling you only get from dancing around in a field with all your pals to amazing tunes.

Demand for spandex soared.

...it was then that I had my light-bulb moment. Giving catsuits away like candy to all my friends and relatives was probably never going to make me a billionaire. I should definitely start making the clothes I love for cash. One business plan, some marketing courses and a website builder later and MayHem was officially born! Unfortunately covid was just around the corner so it's been a rocky start but things are starting to pick up. My priority for MayHem is to promote inclusivity and to celebrate diversity and individuality and my ultimate aim is to empower the wearer with confidence and comfort in my clothing. I take pride in crafting custom made garments tailored to suit every uniquely beautiful body type and feel that what you wear should always make you feel fabulous.

For now it’s just little old me which is why all of my clothing is handmade to order in my home workshop. But who knows where this adventure will lead? Because of this it means MayHem products are all limited edition and ethical. All materials are sourced from UK based companies and cut with the minimum amount of wastage. Any scrap materials are kept and used to make accessories or smaller panel pieces in other garments. This also means that if you want something completely unique you can get in touch and together we can design your perfect outfit or costume.

TL;DR: All MayHem garments are ethically made, high quality, totally unique and truly for everyone. Guaranteed you’ll look and feel fantastic whatever your size or body type. And who doesn’t need a big old dose of that?
